In underground mining, safety and efficiency are inseparable. Every piece of equipment a miner wears plays a role in both – from the boots they walk in, to the cap lamp guiding their way. MST’s TRAK Orb brings these two priorities together by combining reliable underground lighting with personnel tracking, helping mines maintain visibility not only in dark tunnels but across entire operations.
Reliable lighting underground
Lighting remains a miner’s first line of defence underground, and TRAK Orb delivers strong, reliable illumination. Its main high beam produces up to 10,000 lux, while an auxiliary low beam provides energy-efficient visibility for close-up work or when less light is required.
An integrated LED display cycles between displaying the cap lamp’s ID number, current time and battery level. A low battery warning ensures miners aren’t left in the dark unexpectedly, while the lithium-ion battery offers up to 15 hours of continuous operation – enough to power through even extended shifts. Recharging is straightforward via MST’s optional 48- or 80-way charging racks, which indicate each lamp’s charge status and complete a full recharge in roughly six hours.
Personnel tracking
The TRAK Orb integrates MST Global’s Wi-Fi tracking technology into a cordless cap lamp, enabling continuous personnel tracking through a mine’s existing communications network. This integration means that each miner’s location can be pinpointed in real time – a crucial safety measure when working kilometres underground. In emergency situations, knowing precisely where personnel are located allows for faster, targeted response efforts.
Beyond safety, the tracking data also provides a window into how work is being carried out. Supervisors can analyse movement patterns, identify bottlenecks and improve task allocation, leading to measurable gains in productivity and workflow efficiency.
Simple and wearable
Ease of use is central to the TRAK OrbV2’s design. Weighing in at just 170 grams, TRAK OrbV2 is both lightweight and ergonomic, clipping easily onto a miner’s hard hat. Reducing bulk and weight makes a noticeable difference in comfort and fatigue over a long shift. At the end of the day, it’s just as easy to remove and dock on the charging rack. These small efficiencies save time across an entire workforce and reduce the likelihood of equipment damage or misplacement.
Supporting safer, smarter mines
While the TRAK OrbV2 may not be the most feature-packed or market-leading device in its class, it strikes a balance between practicality, durability, and affordability. For many operations, that makes it a solid, dependable choice – one that enhances both safety and efficiency without unnecessary complexity.
In an environment where every second and every metre matters, TRAK OrbV2 demonstrates how simple, integrated technologies can make a meaningful difference. Contact our team to find out more.
