For over 30 years, MST has delivered innovative solutions to monitor and protect personnel and assets in mining and tunnelling operations.

Our journey began with the Personal Emergency Device (PED), designed to strengthen mine emergency preparedness. Today, we offer a proven suite of safety and tracking technologies that help mitigate risk, manage hazards and minimize the impact of incidents when they occur.
People & Asset Tracking
MST’s tracking systems provide real-time visibility of personnel and equipment across both surface and underground operations. These systems improve safety, enable productivity insights, and support emergency management procedures. Key tracking equipment includes cat lamps with integrated tracking, third party bluetooth tracking and kiosks for tag assignments and validation.
MST’s tracking solutions operate with the existing MST Wi-Fi infrastructure, eliminating the need for additional tracking hardware. Tracking data is visualised and managed in HELIX, allowing teams to monitor personnel distribution, access history, and zone occupancy in real time.
- Increase operational safety and awareness
- Enhance personnel and equipment accountability
- Support evacuation, shift control, and access management
- Integrate with HELIX for real-time visibility and historical reporting
Product Solutions
Proximity Detection
MST provides two systems to help manage the risks of machine-person and machine-machine interaction underground.
Proximity Detection System
MST’s Proximity Detection System uses a low-frequency (LF) magnetic field to create a detection zone around machinery. When tagged personnel or another machine fitted with an MST Proximity tag enters this field (configurable between 0.5 m and 20 m), alerts are triggered to both the machine and the tag holder. The system provides digital output and APIs for integration.
Situational Awareness System
This system uses an on-board reader to detect active RFID tags as they approach within 60 to 120 metres of a vehicle. Visual and audio alerts notify the operator of nearby personnel—helping reduce collisions in high-traffic areas.
- Configurable visual and audio alerts
- Personnel and vehicle tag compatibility
- Multiple detection zones
- Supports underground and surface operations
Through-the-Earth Messaging
MST’s Personal Emergency Device (PED®) remains the only proven through-the-earth (TTE) communication system in active use across global mining operations. PED® uses ultra-low frequency transmission to propagate signals through rock strata—ensuring communication reaches all parts of the mine, even in isolated headings. It also provides a vital layer of redundancy and resilience in mine communications, supporting emergency protocols where traditional networks may not reach. Specifically, the PED® system supports:
- Emergency evacuation warning
- Personal paging (text messaging)
- Remote equipment control
- BlastPED® remote blasting system
